I finished this book last night:
(picture from Amazon.. hence the Look Inside!)
Mom let me borrow this book, it was included in a long list of things I brought back with me after Christmas, but I didn’t start it until last week. Why? I don’t know, I have a hard time with novels lately life just gets in the way; and to be honest the Amazon reviews were mixed so I was unsure how I would feel about it.
But I loved it! Once I got into it I couldn’t put it down! This effect hasn’t happened to me since Jodi Picoult came out with House Rules. It can be a bit annoying at times, the main character (Diana) is a witch at Oxford who somehow calls a “lost” book, and this piques the interest of other “creatures” who have been looking for this book for years. She meets a vampire and they become chummy- much to the chagrin of other creatures (witches, vampires and daemons). This is the first of three novels about Diana and I just picked up the sequel this morning at the library. I’m looking forward to getting in a few chapters between baking chocolate chip cookies for tomorrow’s road trip to NJ for the NJ Plants Trade Show, and making dinner for Gabe. I don’t know where you are but it’s in the single digits here! I’m sure he’ll be appreciative of some hot soup when he gets home. Anyway if Shadow of Night is anything like A Discovery of Witches it shouldn’t be long before I’m done with it.
I have boxes of books still packed away, I have a bookshelf overcrowded with books- and this is the first book I’ve read in a long time. I don’t read like I used to, regularly and for long periods of time. I forgot how lovely it is to disappear into a thick novel when life gets complicated.
