Garden Snippet: Cornus Mas ‘Golden Glory’- Cornelian Cherry Dogwood

cornus mas

Are you a forsythia hater like me? Please don’t take this personally if you DO like it, I just think it belongs in the weed category. It never looks nice, except when its in flower and its growth habit is annoying. Well, I have an alternative for those of you, who like me, need some bright color in the early spring but don’t want forsythia. This dogwood has small, bright yellow flowers. (From a distance it might be similar to forsythia, but its blooms are smaller.) Like all dogwoods (and forsythia), this one flowers before leafing out, so right now its just yellow. Of course then you have lovely shiny dogwood leaves, and later the cool football shaped fruit the tree produces.

  1. I do love me some forsythia – but the dogwood seems like it would be a nice substitute!
